Barbie fans have confessed their “true” opinions about the hit film, with many admitting the comedy is “overrated.”

Released in July 2023, the Margot Robbie-led adaptation took the world by storm. Just 17 days after its debut, it became the highest-grossing movie directed by a woman, grossing over $1 billion worldwide.

Alongside its box office success, the drama’s narrative captivated viewers. Barbie follows the titular doll as she leads a perfect life with Ken in Barbieland.

However, when the duo travels to the real world, Barbie is struck by the complexities of human existence. After returning to her pink-clad world, she cannot shake the feeling that there is more to life than Barbieland, propelling her onto a journey of self-discovery.

Warner Bros released the first teaser for the toy drama on December 16 2022, and fans have taken to X, formerly Twitter, to celebrate the milestone. But they are not all singing its praises.

Cinephiles shared their verdicts in a thread prompted by @FilmUpdates, with many echoing that it did not meet their expectations.

One person penned: “I just found my post on Facebook about this film, saying it would be the best film of 2023. Ridiculous.” A second user wrote: “Such an overrated film” and a third posted a gif with the caption: “The truth? It’s overrated.”

Another film fanatic said: “And it wasn’t good” with a fifth writing: “Lmao can’t explain my disappointment at the plot of this movie till now.”

Despite the backlash, other devotees continue to praise the flick: “This is what you get from an auteur who genuinely loves cinema,” yet another person said. Another joked: “To me THIS was best picture.”

The comedy received eight Academy Award nominations, including one for Best Picture. Additionally, Billie Eilish won the Oscar for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures with her hit song, What Was I Made For.

Ryan Gosling co-starred as Ken and America Ferrera had a supporting role. Both Gosling and Ferrera received Oscar nominations for their performances, while many fans considered the leading actress’s omission a snub.
