A Galloway bay has been named one of the top places in Scotland for a winter beach walk.

Killantringan Bay near Portpatrick scored highly with experts at GO Outdoors, who looked at aspects such as average rainfall, temperature, daylight hours and popularity.

The beach at Killantringan made it into the top three due to the fantastic views it offers of Killantringan Lighthouse, with a marked trail allowing visitors to take a walk there and enjoy the sandy landscape.

The beach is surrounded by rocky cliff tops, making it hard to reach in adverse weather conditions, with potential visitors advised to check the weather before heading there.

Author and outdoor enthusiast at GO Outdoors, Calum Jones, said: “Although the cold weather may cause people to stay inside, there is no better time to explore the UK than the winter months.

“As crowds disperse, visitors to beaches often find themselves with miles of coastline to themselves. Some beaches remove car parking charges, and local eateries offer discounts during the off-season months.

“I would recommend wrapping up in the colder months, wearing base layers, and investing in a good waterproof jacket to ensure you can enjoy Scottish beaches no matter the weather.”
