Kasper Schmeichel “should have been sanctioned” according to a former referee for standing inside the box as Celtic took two of their penalties in their Premier Sports Cup final shoot-out win over Rangers.
A clip shared on social media showed the Hoops hero keeper inside the penalty area as Arne Engels successfully despatched his penalty beyond Jack Butland during the 5-4 spot kick win.
A fan asked TheRefsView podcast – run by former whistlers Des Roache and Steve Conroy – “What is Schmeichel doing here? He does this for two of the Celtic penalties. Surely this isn’t allowed.”
The Dane wanders into the box and gestures as Engels prepares his run with referee John Beaton standing right on the edge of the six-yard box looking directly at Schmeichel.
Sharing the IFAB rules which states: “The goalkeeper of the kicker must remain on the field of play, outside the penalty area, on the goal line where it meets the penalty area boundary line.”
And the account added: “Probably should be sanctioned, but no specific mention. At the very least he should be told exactly where to go. This should have ben dealt with, but had no material effect on the outcome of the game.
“Nobody’s fault other than IFAB that no specific sanction prescribed. I would imagine, from now on, it will be dealt with.”
