Train services through Lockerbie are set to run normally over the festive period after strike action was called off.

Train managers in the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) Union at Avanti West Coast planned walk outs just days before Christmas in a row over rest day working.

However, a new offer from the train company has seen the industrial action suspended so that members can be consulted, with a ballot due to end on Tuesday.

An RMT spokesman said: “We remain in dispute with Avanti as our members vote on the revised offer.”

RMT members had been due to strike on December 22, 23 and 29.

Avanti – which runs services through Lockerbie – had warned services would be busy and the timetable would be “reduced significantly”.

The RMT claims the improved offer includes enhanced rest day working payments and discussions on new technology.

An Avanti West Coast spokesperson said: “We are pleased that the RMT have decided to suspend these strikes which would have caused major disruption to our services and this will come as a relief to our customers who were making travel plans over the Christmas period.

“We remain open to discussion with the RMT and await the outcome of the referendum where train managers can vote on this offer.”
