WESTFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/Gray News) – A child was taken to the hospital after being hit by a school bus Friday morning, according to police.

Officials say the incident happened at the intersection of Mechanic and Bartlett Streets just after 7:30 a.m.

Westfield Police Captain Eric Hall confirmed a student was crossing Mechanic Street when he was struck by the bus.

The student’s name and age were not immediately available, but police did confirm the student was in middle school.

Captain Hall also said the bus driver stopped and immediately called the police.

The child was taken to Baystate Medical Center with “serious injuries,” according to police.

The school bus had no kids inside of it at the time of the accident.
