Netflix is gearing up to release a documentary that delves into the life and legacy of late DJ Avicii, told from his perspective.

Dubbed “intimate” and “emotional” on the streaming platform, Avicii – I’m Tim sees the musical producer’s life from his youth in Stockholm to his final years before his tragic death in 2018.

Born Tim Bergling, he was one of the biggest stars to come out of Sweden and shot to fame with electronic hits Hey Brother and Wake Me Up. The musician was only 28 years old when he passed away in Oman, two years after his final performance.

Ahead of the documentary’s debut, here is everything you need to know.

Avicii’s life away from the stage is the central focus of this programme. To achieve this, the documentary features never-before-seen home footage from his early life to the peak of his career. Viewers will also hear personal stories from interviews with friends, family, and colleagues.

According to the official synopsis: “This is a film where Tim himself is the narrator, and he shares his inner self in a way we haven’t heard before.

“Through himself and everyone close to him – family, artist colleagues and best friends – we get to know Tim – the boy behind Avicii – for the first time.”

This will not be the first documentary about the performer; in 2017, the BBC released Avicii: True Stories, featuring appearances from David Guetta, Chris Martin, and Nile Rodgers.

Avicii – My Last Show transports fans back to the EDM star’s final performance in August 2016, at the Ushuaïa Beach Hotel in Ibiza.

Despite being at the height of his fame, the then 26-year-old had announced an indefinite hiatus from touring in the spring of 2016. In a heartfelt statement to fans, he expressed: “I’ve come to know myself better and realize that there’s so much I want to do with my life. I have strong interests in different areas but there’s so little time to explore them.”

He explained: “My choices and career have never been driven by material things, although I’m grateful for all the opportunities and comforts my success has availed me.

“I know I am blessed to be able to travel all around the world and perform, but I have too little left for the life of a real person behind the artist.”

Tim tragically took his own life two years later while on holiday in Oman. His family released an open letter shortly afterwards, which alluded to the musician’s personal struggles.

The statement read in part: “When he stopped touring, he wanted to find a balance in life to be happy and be able to do what he loved most – music. He really struggled with thoughts about Meaning, Life, Happiness.”

The Bergling family concluded: “Tim, you will forever be loved and sadly missed. The person you were and your music will keep your memory alive. We love you, Your Family.”
