(CNN) – Next time you have the urge to go to the bathroom, listen to your body.
Some experts are getting the word out that constantly holding your urine can pose a threat to your health.
The risks come with how the process works in our body.
Nerve receptors tell the brain it is time to go once the bladder is half full, but the brain also tells us to hold it until a socially acceptable time.
Sometimes, we hold it too long and get in the habit of ignoring our bodies. It can increase the risk of a urinary tract infection and possibly kidney damage.
Holding urine too long is especially dangerous for older adults and pregnant women.
Experts say holding it in for up to a few hours a few times a week is not likely to cause harm.
