Derek McInnes admits everyone is desperate to see more of Bobby Wales in action but says substituting the teen ace after 11 minutes against Hearts was the correct call even if it was unpopular with the fans at the time.

The 19-year-old was named in the starting line-up in the league for the first time this term, but was sacrificed following Robbie Deas’ early red card – a decision that was met with boos from the Rugby Park stands.

The Killie gaffer said: “You explain your decisions. Deas going off affects everything. Bobby was going to play anyway, even if Kyle Vassell was playing. We’d made our mind up earlier in the week.

“Anyone could be a manager if you just want to make popular decisions but sometimes you have to make unpopular decisions.

“Everyone’s bursting to see more of Bobby and we thought it was a good game for Bobby to start.

“We spoke about him playing a certain role and having an impact and making runs beyond so of course he’s disappointed, but the team is always more important than the individual and even if we didn’t win the game it was still the right decision.”
