Netflix has just added a film labelled as ‘amazing’ and fans ‘can’t believe how good it is’ with many looking forward to enjoying it all over again.
Originally released in 2022, The Batman became the latest attempt to adapt the iconic comic book character from DC with Robert Pattinson taking on the cape and cowl to play the vigilante. Expectation was high among the fanbase as the title followed the highly acclaimed Dark Knight trilogy from director Christopher Nolan and the less favourable iterations with Ben Affleck in the role.
Matt Reeves, known for Cloverfield as well as Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Let Me In, both wrote and directed the fresh take on Batman. Facing off with Pattinson’s hero was Paul Dano as The Riddler, Colin Farrell as The Penguin and Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman. Andy Serkis steps in as the role of the butler Alfred while John Turturro plays mobster Carmine Falcone.
Now, the film has been added to Netflix’s extensive library and is available for subscribers to stream from today (December 17). With a runtime clocking in at just under three hours, fans may be happy they can watch at their own pace via the platform.
Boasting an 85% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the film was a hit with critics and fans alike upon its initial release. One fan sharing their thoughts posted in their review: “A true work of cinema from Matt Reeves.” Another described it as “the defining Batman movie.”
The film’s story follows Batman as he ventures into Gotham City’s underworld after a sadistic killer leaves behind a trail of cryptic clues. As the scale of the perpetrator’s plans become clear, he must bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that plagues his town.
Another fan described how they were impressed with the performances in the film and its story: “This is a great adaptation of the Batman, it’s a darker, more realistic that anything we’ve seen already. But I don’t understand the hate, people hate it because it’s more of a detective movie, but Batman is the world’s greatest detective, is he not? And when the dark knight came out it was a great movie, and still is, but know every Batman movie automatically gets compared to it. There is just no freedom to let them do there on different thing with it.”
Meanwhile, one viewer shared: “”Something we never gotten in any Batman movie before the detective side of Batman. Robert Pattison is one of the best Batman. Paul Dano’s performance of The Riddler is creepy and scary taken definitely after the Zodiac killer. Zoe Kravitz is an awesome Catwoman . Honestly at first I thought I wouldn’t like Jeffery Wright as Commissioner Gordon but he was fantastic. The makeup for the Penguin is insane and Collin Ferrell played him perfect. Loved Andy Serkis as Alfred . This is one of the best DC comic book movies ever made and can we skip right out of 2025 and go right into 2026 for The Batman II.”
Making more than $700 million at the box office, the film was such a success that it inspired a spin-off television series developed by HBO. Reprising his villainous role, Colin Farrell starred in the titular role of The Penguin which became one of the best show’s of 2024 according to Empire.
A sequel is supposed to be in the works with Matt Reeves returning to write and direct. However, James Gunn, who has taken over DC film studios has reportedly claimed that a script for the follow up is yet to be submitted.
