TAZEWELL COUNTY, Va. – Plans for a large scale solar farm in Tazewell County are still on the books according to the county’s administrator.
The solar farm is planned to be placed on two hundred acres of land near Cavitt’s Creek Park with construction expected to begin sometime in 2025. Tazewell County administrator, Eric Young says a company called Energix is responsible for the project.
Young says the company is still in the process of obtaining permitting for the project.
“It goes into the grid and hopefully keeps costs down for everybody. As far as what it does for the county they’re probably going to pay $280,000 a year in property taxes on that property. That’s helpful for us, that will help us fund a lot of things we need like schools and law enforcement,” said Young.
A solar farm ordinance was passed in February that requires permission from the county to approve commercial solar farms. Young says Energix’s solar farm is good to go as a site agreement was reached earlier this year.
The solar farm will abide by guidelines in the ordinance which include being hidden from roadways by vegetation and fencing as well as bond money to remove the solar panels once they’re no longer in use.
Young says he wants to remind people that the solar farm ordinance only applies to commercial solar farms and not personal solar panels used to reduce electricity costs for homes.
