Amanda Holden has taken to social media to defend her hosting debut at the Royal Variety Performance after viewers hit out at her and Alan Carr.
The Britain’s Got Talent judge presented the annual charity bash alongside comedian Alan Carr, and just moments into their appearance fans took to twitter to criticise the duo.
Amanda has responded to the criticism, defending their efforts despite admitting she knows she should ignore it, reports the Mirror.
She shared that both she and Alan “loved every second” of their appearance on what she described as a “joyous and successful evening.” She then added: “All the big shows get battered… Merry Christmas you lovely lot. Our ratings were brilliant so that’s what counts xx”
Her comment received support from several celebrities, including Mark Wright and Romesh Ranganathan. Actress Victoria Smurfit also defended their performance, writing: “Take it as proof you were both brilliant!!!!!”
Comedian Leigh Francis, who is known as Keith Lemon, defended the pair, writing: “I didn’t see it but I bet you were both amazing! I’ve seen you together hosting an awards and you were ace!”
The defence follows backlash over the pre-recorded event, which took place last month and aired on Sunday.
One fan bluntly let their feelings known, writing on Twitter: “Amanda Holden, no thanks #RoyalVarietyPerformance.” Whilst another said: “Dreadful presenters #RoyalVarietyPerformance,” and a third person complained: “Well, Alan Carr and Amanda Holden are absolutely dreadful. This opening is so awkward. #RoyalVarietyPerformance.”
Despite the criticism, Amanda previously expressed her joy at being part of the event, calling her role “an honour”. Before the programme aired, she stated: “It truly is such an honour to be hosting the Royal Variety Performance this year. I’m still pinching myself!
“This is a dream job and Alan is a true friend, we are already bursting with ideas and excitement, it’s going to be such a fun night!
“I’ve worked on Britain’s Got Talent for 18 years and have been so proud watching all our winners perform for the Royal Family. This year will be no different, so in the words of Sydnie Christmas, let’s av it!”

She had told viewers they were “in for a treat”, during the build up to the show.
Alan also shared similar thoughts before the show, saying enthusiastically: “I am completely thrilled to be asked back to host the Royal Variety Performance so soon, what a compliment and an honour! To be able to host this magical evening with my best friend and tv wife Amanda Holden is the icing on the cake for me. If we have half as much fun as we did three years ago, well we are all in for a real treat.”
