MERCER COUNTY, W.Va. – The Mercer County Animal Shelter is now offering free animal adoptions through the end of the year thanks to a sponsorship initiative by New Hope Family Practice in Princeton.

People are encouraged to stop by the animal shelter and adopt a dog or cat for the holidays at no charge. Cats and dogs adopted from the shelter are free and include a voucher to be spayed or neutered at no cost.

“If you need a new buddy for Christmas that you’re going to take care of long term because it’s a commitment. Please do and consider one of these fine animals that they have out there because they all need a home,” said Dr. Jana Peters, New Hope Family Practice.

New Hope Family Practice is also accepting monetary as well as food and toy donations for the animal shelter. Those items can be dropped off at the animal shelter or at New Hope Family Practice located on Courthouse Road during business hours.

Right now the animal shelter is at full capacity and the need to adopt is critical, particularly for dogs.

An adoption event is planned for Dec. 19 at the Mercer Mall thanks to Uncharted Adventures. Animals from the animal shelter will be available for adoption for free as part of the “Santa Paws” pet pictures event.

An adoption event is also planned for Dec. 21 at the MCAS from 12 pm to 6 pm. Pictures with Santa, crafts and raffle baskets worth $300 will also be happening during the event.
