Gale force winds are set to cause chaos in Dumfries and Galloway just before Christmas.

A yellow weather warning has been issued for Saturday, with the Met Office predicting wind speeds of up to 60mph.

And forecasters fear it could have “a greater than usual impact given the busier pre-Christmas weekend travel”.

The warning is due to last from 7am to 9pm on Saturday and covers the west of Dumfries and Galloway.

Travel delays are likely and coastal communities could be battered by waves, with a “small chance of isolated, short term loss of power”.

A Met Office forecaster said: “Strong westerly winds are expected to develop through the course of Saturday, with gusts of 50-60 mph developing quite widely across this region.

“This has the potential to cause delays to public transport and some disruption to the road network, which may have a greater than usual impact given the busier pre-Christmas weekend travel.

“Dangerous coastal conditions can be expected too, with large waves an additional hazard.”
