GEORGETOWN, Texas — Georgetown ISD is looking to fill school counselor vacancies by waiving certain certification requirements.
The board of trustees approved a waiver this month to remove a Texas Education Agency certification requirement for counselors on Monday.
Under TEA requirements, counselors need to pass an exam to work in Texas schools. With this waiver, potential counselors at GISD don’t have to pass the test but still must be licensed through the Texas state board.
The decision comes as GISD and other school districts struggle to hire counselors. The waiver allows the district to consider mental health professionals and counselors with certifications including licensed professional counselors, licensed professional counselor associates, licensed master social workers and licensed clinical social workers.
