If there’s one thing we’re passionate about at Christmastime, it’s food.

And to celebrate the big day, many of us snap up boxes of Celebrations. The red tin has become a big part of festive traditions in the UK.

But despite this, there is one gripe that many have with the selection box. Not only do some moan about the quantity of Bounties, others complain their favourite choccies aren’t included enough.

So to see if this is actually true, our sweet-toothed news reporter Jess Flaherty decided to do an investigation of her own. She picked up a Celebrations box for £6 and started counting – and here’s what she found.

I was disappointed not to get more Maltesers
There’s loads of Snickers but barely any Maltesers in this box (Image: Jess Flaherty)

Number of chocolates in Jess’ Celebrations box by type

  • Maltesers – 5 (outrageous and very disappointing)

  • Galaxy – 4 (this has to be a joke)

  • Galaxy Caramel – 5 (devastating)

  • Mars – 9 (I do enjoy a Mars but it’s not a firm fave)

  • Milky Way – 10 (a bit controversial but I do love a Milky Way so this didn’t bother me)

  • Bounty – 8 (a bold move to give us more Bountys than Maltesers)

  • Snickers – 10 (is this really what replaced the Galaxy Truffle?!)

  • Twix – 8 (my least favourite)

  • Total number of chocolates: 59

Jess wasn’t happy about the lower quantities of Maltesers and Galaxy choccies – and this wasn’t her only gripe. She’s also not a fan on how shrinkflation has impacted the product.

She said: “I’m absolutely not a fan of this newer, slimline box – especially since it costs £6. You get 550g of chocolate inside which, quite frankly, doesn’t seem enough for the price in my humble opinion. I also remember these tubs costing £4 not too long ago.

“Asda did have an offer on for two tubs of Christmas chocolates for £9, which works out at £4.50 each. But if you’re only after one, you’re having to spend a couple of quid more than you would’ve done a few years ago…

“I remember completing a similar experiment a couple of years ago and there were 71 chocolates in the tub, so we’re not imagining it when we think Celebrations have gotten smaller as there’s definitely fewer in the tub this Christmas.”

Mars has been contacted for comment.
