European action returns to Tynecastle as Hearts look to give their fans some much-needed Christmas cheer.

Defeat to a Kilmarnock side who spent more than 80 minutes with 10 men on Sunday was a hammer blow to Neil Critchely’s side, as they missed the chance to climb off the foot of the Premiership table – but their attentions will now turn to the Europa Conference League, and attempting to secure knockout football. Victory against the Moldovan champions Petroclub would come as a major boost, especially as the January transfer window looms.

So far it’s been a Conference League campaign of two halves for the Gorgie club, who started with memorable victories against Dinamo Minsk and Omonia Nicosia – but that has been followed by three straight defeats against Bundesliga side Heidenheim, Belgians Cercle Brugge and top Danish outfit FC Copenhagen last week. Key to their chances will be Lawrence Shankland, who is still on the search for his first European goal of the season – and missed Saturday’s defeat to Kilmarnock through suspension. If he can build on a double against Dundee earlier this month the Jambos know they’ll have a real chance of making it another special European night in the capita.
