BLUEFIELD, W.Va. -Christina Musick is a Richlands High School Teacher who has been working for over a decade to make positive impacts in her community.

“Something that I tell my students quite regularly is when we know better, we should do better and knowing that we have people who are struggling and need something leads us to doing better by helping those people who are in need,” said Christina Musick, Richlands High School Teacher.

Musick throughout the year makes sure her students are taken care of in anyway needed. At Christmas time she makes sure every student who may need, as she says, “an extra blessing,” receives it through the RHS Gives Back Club with White Christmas.

“They love her for this. I mean she’s a very shy person. She doesn’t like to be in the forefront. I mean, if she could have her way, nobody would even know she sponsors this, but she does a great job, and it the kids are very appreciative of everything she does for them,” said Rickie Vencill, Principal for Richlands High School.

Starting at the beginning of the school year Musick begins planning for White Christmas making sure no child is left behind receiving wants and needs.

“This is not about me. This is about everybody out there outside of my classroom right now. It’s about the kids who get to sit in my classroom who come to school and sometimes this building is the only safe place they have, and it’s about seeing when, when they’re handed a present, it’s about seeing their eyes light up because they really weren’t forgotten,” said Musick.

Not only is she providing her students with an education throughout the week, but she is spending extra time after school providing.

“Her heart is so big, and she gives of herself, and she spends hours and hours with no compensation. I mean, it’s strictly her love for our students and our community that she does this for, and I’m sure she spends a lot of her own money on this sometimes too because nobody on the list goes without getting something. Everybody put on the list gets presents at Christmas time,” said Vencill.

To Musick Richlands High School is much more than a building.

“We are a community. Our school is a community, but our school is a family, and we want to come together as family for anyone who needs something, not just at Christmas,” said Musick.

Musick is working year around to provide for her family, from back-to-school supplies, graduation needs, disaster needs and even reaching out to Toys for Tots for bags for 150 students.

“We try to help out in any way we’re needed. When we learn of a need, we try to supply for that need,” said Musick.

Musick supplies the needs of her students and plants seeds within them, having some later return down the road to lend a helping hand.

“ That’s a big part of what it is also, it is giving back portion of it, of RHS Gives Back, and I’m so thankful that my previous students and our previous students at this school realize that, you know, sometimes we’re down, but we’re never out, and when we have the chance to give back, that’s what we should do,” said Musick.

It’s Musick’s love for her kids and her community that makes her a WVVA Hometown Hero.
