MADISON, Wis. (WMTV/Gray News) – The Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office released the names of the teacher and student who died in Monday’s shooting at the Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin.

The teacher was identified as 42-year-old Erin West, Officials said the DeForest woman died as a result of homicidal firearm related trauma.

She was a full-time teacher at the school.

Rubi Vergara, 14, was identified as the student who was killed. Authorities said the Madison teen also died as a result of homicidal firearm related trauma.

The obituary for the teen said she was an avid reader who loved art, singing and playing the keyboard.

Both victims died at the scene.

The Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office is continuing to investigate these deaths.

Six people were taken to the hospital with injuries. Police said that four have been released. Two others remain in the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

On Wednesday night, the Madison Police Department shared the latest details into the investigation of the shooting.

Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said a second grade teacher called 911 at 10:57 a.m. on Monday. The teacher was not in the same room as the shooter.

The first law enforcement official, a Dane County deputy, arrived at the school at 11 a.m.

Less than 30 seconds later, Madison police officers arrived and entered the school.

At 11:05 a.m., officers said a shooter was down and that a gun had been recovered.

The fire department arrived and began to help victims who had been shot. Police also began setting up a reunification center.

The first public notice about the shooting was posted to the police department’s website at 11:13 a.m.

A minute later, authorities began clearing the building, and bomb dogs were brought into the school as a precaution at 11:23 a.m.

Area churches and local organizations have planned community events and vigils to help those impacted by the school shooting.

On Monday night, Barnes identified the shooter as Natalie “Samantha” Rupnow. Madison police said was found in the school with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Wednesday that the 15-year-old Madison teenager died at a local hospital as a result of the firearm trauma.

Barnes said Rupnow had two handguns on Monday, but only used one during the shooting.
