With Christmas just around the corner, schools nationwide have been winding down in anticipation of a well-deserved break.
For some lucky students, canteens have been serving up special festive meals, often consisting of turkey, potatoes, vegetables, and a dessert.
However, one student has sparked a heated debate after sharing a photo of their school’s Christmas lunch on Reddit, expressing their disappointment with the meal. While some users shared the student’s dissatisfaction, others couldn’t understand the issue, with one commenting: “You can’t knock that for a school dinner.”

Another user reminisced about their own school dinners, saying: “I absolutely miss school purely for school dinners, especially primary school dinners! Burger day was the s***. It sounds weird, but I’d have a scoop of mash or two, a government issued burger and gravy all over it.”
A third user chimed in, saying: “Looks decent, actually. I wouldn’t complain. Veg looks boiled not roasted, but I understand that it would take so much more time and effort.” On the other hand, some users were less impressed, with one commenting: “Those carrots look like they’re out of a tin.”
One agreed: “We deliberately have ‘school dinners’ or ‘prison dinners’ in our house occasionally and we are grandparents. We remember the school dinners but not prison dinners. We just call them that. The school dinners are a nostalgia thing.”
Another commented bleakly: “Oh god that’s depressing.” This comes on the heels of criticism towards a school for serving what has been described as a “crime against humanity.”
The unappetising meal photos shared online prompted disbelief and condemnation for how “disgusting” it appears. A dismayed student took to Reddit, revealing: “My friend’s lunch at school – gluten-free green pea stew.”
Although the image is unclear, it seems to be a mound of pea jelly with two processed sausages. Doubts about the food’s edibility were raised, with one person questioning whether the school was actually in Chernobyl.
One user expressed their horror with: “Honey what’s wrong? You haven’t touched your hotdogs and Pea-mould yet,” while others showed revulsion, one suggesting they’d seen the recipe in “1970s cookbooks.”
One puzzled commenter posted: “These are wieners in tiny condoms, but could be wrong…” while another advised: “You should turn the chef in for crimes against humanity.”
