Police have confirmed tonight that eight people were taken to hospital after a bus crashed into a bridge.

A huge emergency operation was launched this afternoon after the double-decker vehicle’s roof was ripped off after going under a bridge that was too small for the coach.

Eight people were taken to hospital after the smash just before 2pm. However, police say there are no reports of any serious injuries.

The Scottish Ambulance Service say they transferred four passengers to Crosshouse Hospital. While Stagecoach bosses said they were aware of two people who were injured and being given treatment.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers were called to a crash involving a double decker bus on Culzean Crescent in Kilmarnock around 1.55pm today.

“Eight passengers were taken to hospital. There are no reports of serious injuries.

“Enquiries are ongoing into the collision.

“The road reopened around 5.30pm.”

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson added: “We received a call at 13:55 to attend an incident on Culzean Crescent, Kilmarnock. One ambulance and three special operations response teams (SORT) were dispatched to the scene and four patients were transported to University Hospital Crosshouse.”

A Stagecoach West Scotland spokesperson said: “We can confirm there has been an incident involving one of our buses in Kilmarnock this afternoon (19/12/24). The 6 service, which runs from Kilmarnock Bus Station to New Farm Loch, struck a low bridge. We are aware of two people who were injured and are currently being treated by emergency services. Investigations are ongoing and we are working closely with Police Scotland.”
