Gianluigi Donnarumma has been issued an apology after a dangerous challenge left him with horrific facial scars.
Monaco defender Wilfried Singo’s struck the PSG goalkeeper in the head when competing for the ball during their Ligue 1 clash on Wednesday night. The Italian Euros winners had to be replaced 22 minutes in at the Stade Louis II after tangling with the Ivorian defender as the towering stopper raced from his line.
Songo survived a red card and Russian back up keeper Matvey Safonov replaced Gigi. Despite the setback the Parisians rallied to win the game 4-2 thanks to an Ousmane Dembele brace. The reigning champions extended their lead at the top of the table to 10 points.
However, the full extent of Donnarumma’s bloodied injuries emerged at full time with pictures showing extensive scarring and staples on his right cheek. Songo has since apologised writing: “My gesture was obviously not intentional, but I was able to see afterwards that he had a significant injury to his face. I wish you a good recovery.”
The former AC Milan captain will not feature for PSG in for their final fixture of the calendar year, with an update on their official website reading: “Victim of facial trauma with multiple wounds, Gianluigi Donnarumma will return to Paris with the team. He will undergo medical examinations and will have to remain inactive for several days.”
PSG are in French Cup action against Lens on Sunday with a winter break will then be taken in before facing Monaco again on January 5, 2025 in the Trophee des Champions final.
