A woman was lauded for serving the “best” meal her brother-in-law had ever eaten, only for him to turn irate when he discovered the ingredients.

Cooking for guests can be a challenge, as catering to various tastes and dietary needs often feels like a juggling act.

A 29-year-old woman was eager to host her family for dinner at her home over the weekend. She’s a vegan but doesn’t “make a big deal about it”, stating she cooks “tasty food and never forces anyone to eat a certain way”.

For her family, she chose to prepare a lasagne, accompanied by garlic bread, salad and a chocolate cake. Being a vegan, she naturally assumed everyone would realise she’d be using vegan ingredients for each dish.

The meal was a hit, but things took a sour turn when her sister asked for the recipe. On Reddit’s popular ‘Am I The A**hole’ forum, the woman shared: “Everyone complimented the food, especially my sister’s husband, who had two helpings and said it was ‘the best lasagne he’s ever had’.

“At the end of the night, my sister asked for the lasagne recipe. I casually mentioned it was made with lentils and a cashew-based cheese. Her husband overheard and got furious, saying I ‘tricked him’ into eating vegan food. He claimed it was ‘unethical’ to serve him something without ‘full disclosure’.

“My sister sided with him and said I should’ve warned them it wasn’t ‘real lasagne.’ My mum also said I was wrong for not being upfront. But I didn’t hide anything maliciously – I just didn’t think it was a big deal.”

She asked for opinions on whether she was in the wrong, but most Reddit users were stunned by her brother-in-law’s reaction. One user commented: “NTA. I eat meat and can’t understand this guy at all.

“Food should taste good, if it tastes good I don’t care if it’s vegan or not, I basically try everything that’s served. I could only understand such behaviour in allergy sufferers.”

Another person said: “Militant meat eaters are just as bad as militant vegans. They mostly have more in common than they’d like to. It’s both terrible.”

A third simply said: “They went to the house of a vegan, expecting non vegan food. They’re nuts.”

Another shared: “Everyone loves vegan food until you tell them it’s vegan.”

However, some users were skeptical, with one commenting: “The best lasagne he’s ever had? He’s such a meat eater he can’t tell the difference between ground beef and lentils? Either this story is fake or that man has no sense of taste whatsoever. I’m sure your lasagne was fine but in no way do I believe a meat eater would not tell the difference.”

Another added: “What a weird thing to get upset about. You didn’t feed him anything offensive, pull a ‘gotcha’ at the end of the meal or lie about what you were serving.

“My vote, don’t apologise. You don’t reward someone throwing a fit about enjoying a meal. He disrespected you by implying you are dishonest and acting disgusted by you and a meal he thoroughly enjoyed.”
