Labour has clung on to power in Scotland’s capital despite its former leader being forced to resign after facing allegations of inappropriate behaviour.

The party will continue running a minority administration on Edinburgh City Council despite having just 10 of 63 councillors.

A vote was called at the City Chambers today following the shock resignation earlier this month of former Labour leader Cammy Day.

The senior councillor was accused of bombarding two Ukrainian refugees with messages on social media asking about their sexual preferences.

Day was previously suspended by Scottish Labour when the allegations were first reported by the Sunday Mail. He also faces a police investigation following reports of “inappropriate behaviour”.

Day had allegedly contacted two Ukrainian refugees on social media with messages to ask about their sexual preferences, tried to meet for dates and sent compliments on their looks.

One Ukrainian national, who fled the Russian invasion in 2022, told the paper how they were bombarded with messages from the politician when they arrived in Edinburgh.

The messages show Day asking sexually explicit questions, sending love heart and kissing emojis and repeatedly asking the individual if they want to “meet up for wine”.

Most of them were unanswered by the refugee. Day also contacted them on a dating app where the messages were more sexually explicit.

The refugee said they felt they should be “polite” but tried to stay away from sexual topics.

A second refugee, who has now left Edinburgh for another country, also confirmed they had received multiple messages from Day via social media and dating sites while they were living in the city.

Police Scotland said it was investigating a complaint of inappropriate behaviour made on October 22
