Dundee United will have to go into their festive push without Louis Moult.

The experienced striker has suffered ligament damage in his shoulder in last weekend’s defeat to Motherwell. Moult, who scored in the 4-3 defeat against his former club, left Fir Park in a sling. Scans have shown that he has damaged the ligaments although United can’t put an exact time scale on how long he will be sidelined for. The hope is that it will be weeks rather than months.

United have a busy period which sees them entertain Celtic on Sunday, head to St Johnstone, host Aberdeen, cross the road for the derby and then take on Hearts and the Hoops once again in a busy start to the New Year.

Moult’s injury is a blow to United, who are pushing for a top six place and the player, himself, who has recently returned from a fractured bone in his leg.

Goodwin still has striking options with top scorer Sam Dalby fit and Moult’s injury might open the door for Jort van der Sande to get more game time.
