A man has gone viral with his unconventional tip for preventing your car windscreen from icing over.
In the depths of winter, motorists often struggle with the morning ritual of defrosting their cars, but this TikTok user has come out with a straightforward solution. Posting under username @HerbieLad49, he posted footage where he places an oversized tea towel over his car’s windscreen before the temperature drops.
He later shows viewers how he easily removes the now-frozen towel, revealing a pristine and ice-free windscreen.

His accompanying caption to the TikTok video summarises his crafty car trick: “Well, the windshield didn’t freeze. #ice #carhacks #dontforgetobringatowel.”
The clip has quickly gained 29.4 million views, with 2.5 million likes and thousands of comments. One commenter praised the simple yet effective method, stating: “Mega underrated life hack. I do this every night, no faffing about in the morning, just towel off and go.”
Meanwhile, another likened it to a beauty treatment for vehicles: “It’s like a pore strip for the car.”
Another person confirmed its effectiveness by saying: “It did work tho, just made a frozen towel in the process” and another shared: “I’ve been doing this for 10 years. It legit works. You can slightly dampen the towel for friction in the beginning so it doesn’t move or blow off.”
Another user remarked: “Now you have a clear windshield and a new best friend.”
An additional comment read: “That worked way better than I thought it would honestly.”
The sight of the frozen towel led many to draw comparisons with the South Park character Towelie, a blue talking towel with white stripes. Among the comments, one user asked: “Is that Towelie?” while more chimed in with: “It’s Towelie.”
Other TikTok users likened the icy towel to various objects including a sled, a mat, and even a magic carpet akin to the one in Aladdin. A user reacted by posting: “It’s his very own magic carpet.”
One individual revealed that she uses a windshield cover ice blocker which “works wonders”. Another suggested: “Buy a proper windscreen cover. Does job far better and (is) waterproof.”
However, towels aren’t the only household items found to be handy in defrosting car windshields. TikToker Meggy G divulged that a ziplock bag can also do the job.
She advises: “Take this with you as a sign to keep a ziplock bag in your car. No scrapper, no de-icer, just your little ziplock bag and some warm water.”
Meggy outlined her technique: “Roll it over your windscreen while you have the warm air blowers on and the ice will just melt away.”
