Two Motherwell men have been sentenced after random daytime attacks near Hamilton town centre.

Declan Morrison, 20, and Reece Goodfellow, 19, admitted assault charges and Morrison also admitted stealing a pair of gloves from a child.

The incidents happened on October 29 last year.

Morrison, of Logans Road, was sentenced to 28 months detention with a 15-month supervised release order. Goodfellow, of Merry Street, received an 18-month sentence.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard Morrison had tried to get some of those he targeted to join him in making a video.

Aga Mathieson, prosecuting, said: “Around 2.10pm a male, aged 17, was walking in Quarry Street and minding his own business when Morrison approached.

“The complainer ignored him and tried to walk away but was punched on the face. Then Morrison struck him on the forehead with a bottle, causing a 1.5cm wound that has left a scar.

“Twenty minutes later two boys, aged 11 and 13, were at an underpass in Hamilton Palace Grounds when Morrison approached and shouted ‘Give me all your money’.

“He demanded their belongings and removed a pair of Nike gloves from one boy.

“As with the first victim, Morrison tried to get the boys to take part in a video recording, but they wouldn’t.

“They managed to run away and Morrison turned his attention to a 67-year-old man who was passing by. He grabbed the man by the jacket and punched him on the face.”

Goodfellow was in the vicinity and, about 2.45pm, he ran up to a 16-year-old boy and for no apparent reason smashed a glass bottle in his face. Luckily, this caused only a minor cut.

The court heard that police received a number of calls about the violence and when officers arrived both accused were detained but not without a fight.

Morrison threw a speaker at one officer, striking him on the chin, then punched and kicked him.

Goodfellow tried to headbutt an officer who was arresting him. Both accused were on bail for other matters at the time.

Morrison’s sentence was backdated as he had been held in custody ahead of the case.
