Festive bin collection dates have been thrown in to disarray after the West Dunbartonshire Council (WDC) delayed bin uplift days by two weeks, blaming “workforce resource challenges” for the decision.

On Thursday morning, the council provided an update to residents as they warned that bin collections will be moved back by a fortnight.

Residents whose bins were due to be collected on Christmas day, Boxing day and New Year’s day were initially told that they would be emptied that weekend. However, the council has now advised that they will not be uplifted until at least January 8.

A spokesperson for WDC said: “We are very sorry to advise that due to workforce resource challenges the previously advertised Christmas bin collection schedule has been changed.

“Residents whose normal collections fall on public holidays over the Christmas period (Wednesday or Thursday) are now asked to present their bins as per the updated schedule.”

The means that bins due to be collected on Christmas day will not be collected on Wednesday, January 8; those collected on Boxing day won’t be emptied until Thursday, January 9. Bins due for collection on January 1 will now have to wait until Wednesday, January 15, and those set for January 2 will now happen on Thursday, January 16.

In addition, brown bins will not be collected from Monday, December 23, until Sunday, January 5 inclusive.

The council spokesperson added: “To ensure teams can prioritise increased general and recyclable waste, special uplifts will be unavailable throughout this period and will recommence for booking from Monday, January 20.

“Recycling centres are open throughout the festive period from 8am until 5.30pm, with closures only on the public holidays each week.

“We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you in advance for your patience.”

The move comes after the council had already placed tags on resident’s wheelie bins advising of the changes to the schedule over the festive period.
