For some, December 26 is all about chilling out and eating leftovers from Christmas. However, for many others, it’s about all the discounts that can be made on everything from fashion and beauty to tech gadgets ahead of the New Year.
Even after the hustle and bustle of shopping throughout December, many of us are eager to do it all over again. That being said, the past few years have been a little different since many retailers opt to keep their doors closed on Boxing Day.

When are the Boxing Day sales 2024?
While Boxing Day falls on December 26 every year, closures and the switch to online shopping means that the sales are not always on the exact day anymore.
Many major retailers have not confirmed when their sales will take place this year, but it can be presumed that many will go available in store on December 27. It is also worth checking online, as they often go available early.
One store that has confirmed their date is Next, with the firm’s highly anticipated sale going live in store from December 27. However, the retailer has said shoppers can find the sale online from Christmas Eve.

Why is it called Boxing Day?
Despite being heavily associated with shopping these days, it is said that the term ‘Boxing Day’ originated during the reign of Queen Victoria in the 1800’s.
The name, surprisingly, does have a connection with boxes. Victoria and the wealthier population of the UK would box up gifts for their maids, servants and housekeepers who were also given that one day off to spend with their loved ones.
The church also played a part in the creation of one of the biggest shopping events in history, as they would hand out the money that had been collected throughout the year to those in need.
