Christmas festivities lent an air of fun to the final days of term in St Aidan’s High School in Wishaw.
The celebrations started in style with two performances of “Peter Pan Goes Wrong” by senior Drama students. The West End show is a play within a play, depicting a production of Peter Pan which is strewn with entertaining mishaps.
The pupils worked hard to deliver the show with perfect comic timing, and S1 and S2 pupils thoroughly enjoyed the shows.
Logan Byrne of S6 played Captain Hook/Chris in both shows. He said: “It has been brilliant to do a school show in my last year.”
Miss Brand, Teacher of Drama, added: “Everyone has worked tirelessly. They are some of the most talented and creative young people I have ever had the privilege of working with.”
The last week of school started with the traditional annual concert for family and friends, showcasing the talents of a wide range of pupils, supported by the hard work and dedication of the Music Department staff.
Classic Christmas songs were played and sung, and a range of musicians were able to showcase their talents in an evening which was well received by all.
Mr Paul Kennedy, Principal Teacher of Music, said: “Participation in these performances instils a great deal of confidence in our young people, while offering them the opportunity to showcase their God-given talents to the wider community.
“Preparing pupils for the Christmas concerts is always a highlight of the school year for the music teaching staff.”
The following day, the pupils performed again for around 150 pensioners and care home residents from the local area. Those in attendance were treated to a lovely afternoon tea, in addition to the fantastic performances.
A staff member from a local care home said: “Our residents had a great time watching the children perform and couldn’t believe the talent; the children were fantastic. The food and drinks were also lovely and our cups were never empty thanks to all the children keeping them topped up. We had a great afternoon!”
Finally, the S6 students dressed en masse as Santa’s elves and welcomed 32 S1 pupils from Fir Park Secondary School for an afternoon of music and games. The pupils received gifts which were provided by S6 students who had been tirelessly fundraising for months.
Miss Louise Cairns, Principal Teacher of Pupil Support for S6, said: “It was amazing to see the joy and excitement throughout the day. Our S6 pupils were brilliant, showing kindness and adaptability in their interactions—whether they were dancing, playing games, or sitting quietly with the S1 pupils to ensure they felt comfortable and included.”
She particularly praised the organising committee adding: “Their attention to detail, creativity, and teamwork made the event unforgettable.”
The term ended with a staff lunch at which Acting Head Teacher Mr Dominic Kennedy thanked the staff for another term of hard work and dedication.
