A Scots soldier has been found guilty of manslaughter following a Canadian bar brawl last year that resulted in the death of a man.

We previously reported that Corporal Craig Gibson, from Dalry, Ayrshire, was charged following the death of local businessman Brett Sheffield. The Manitoba resident was left critically injured following an incident at a Toronto bar on August 28.

The 38-year-old died in hospital two days later.

Corporal Gibson, 28, of 4 Scots, the Highlanders, had served in Iraq, and was in Canada as part of a military exercise when the incident allegedly took place.

Gibson initially plead not guilty, however, he has now been found guilty of manslaughter. In January, a date for a sentencing hearing will be set. The maximum sentence for being convicted of manslaughter is life imprisonment.

The Army confirmed at the time they were aware of his arrest.

A tribute was paid to Mr Sheffield online following his death from his colleagues at NextGen Drainage, a company he founded. They said: “Brett Sheffield passed away on August 30 due to a random act of violence. His absence is felt deeply across the community, our company, and his vast network of friends and colleagues. Brett’s passion for helping every person feel valued and cared for, will continue to motivate us.”

And Pal Matt Mroz added: “We always had big plans. I guess God’s was just a little bigger this time. Hopefully there’s an abundance of acres up there needing tile drainage, rest easy pal we’re gonna miss you.”
