AUSTIN, Texas — The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) is considering relocating its East Austin station.
The agency said it is eyeing an area within three miles of its former East Austin location at 1914 E. Sixth St., and it wants the public to weigh in.
USPS said East Austin post office customers have been notified about the relocation through a postcard in the mail. Instead of holding a public meeting, the agency is asking customers to send comments on the project to the following address:
Attn: Austin, TX, East Austin Station Relocation
U.S. Postal Service
PO Box 27497
Greensboro, NC 27498-1103
Comments must be received no later than Feb. 2. At that time, USPS will consider the comments it has received and, following that consideration, will make a final decision whether to proceed with, modify or cancel the project.
If USPS decides to proceed with the project, it said the process will consist of procuring a suitable substitute location, preparing the new location for use as a post office and then transitioning retail services to the new location.
In the meantime, customers can access USPS retail services at 4516 Burleson Road until a new post office is up and running.
This isn’t the first shakeup of Austin’s post offices this year. Back in January, USPS closed a post office on the University of Texas campus. The agency said at the time it was working to “actively explore viable options for another location.”
