WASHINGTON — Rickey Henderson, the baseball Hall of Famer who holds the Major League Baseball’s all-time record for most bases stolen, has died, according to multiple media reports. He was 65.
The former Oakland Athletics player reportedly died after a battle with pneumonia, according to the Bay Area News Group. TMZ was the first to report the news.
NBC Sports California and the New York Post confirmed the baseball great’s death on Saturday.
Henderson would have turned 66 on Christmas Day. He played for the Athletics, New York Yankees, San Diego Padres among other teams during his 25 MLB seasons.
Dave Winfield, who is a fellow Hall of Famer, paid tribute to his former teammate on social media Saturday.
“I still cannot believe I’ve lost one of my favorite teammates and great friend Rickey Henderson. Rest in peace,” Winfield said on Instagram.
