HOUSTON — Supporters gathered at Gallery Furniture in Richmond Friday afternoon to welcome home Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale home after he underwent open heart surgery last week.
The popular furniture salesman and philanthropist enjoyed some star treatment, posing for photos and signing autographs. McIngvale told KHOU 11 he couldn’t wait to get back into the store — with his doctor’s blessing, of course.
“I’m glad to be back at work,” he said. “I asked my doctor, I said, ‘What should I do, doc?’ He said, ‘Go back to work.’ I said,’ you’re my kind of guy.'”
His supporters made sure to show him plenty of love in his return.
“Great guy, he’s done a lot for the city,” one supporter said.
“Houston legend,” said another. “I love you Mattress Mack.”
McIngvale said he’s happy to serve the community.
“Feels great. My life for 43 years centered around the Houston community and our great customers,” McIngvale said. “To be out here with my people, customers, staff members, team members, it’s what life is all about. Making community a better place for all of us and putting some smiles on some kiddos’ faces.”
McIngvale underwent the surgery on December 10 and has been working on his recovery ever since.
KHOU 11’s Shern-Min Chow talked to McIngvale the day after his surgery. Here’s that conversation.
