The Met Office has issued a warning for ice after heavy snowfall hit the country and even forced a Scots ski centre to close.
There were initially concerns for the 60mph winds hitting the country but a predications for snow also became a reality as snow gates were closed on the A93 at Spittal of Glenshee and Braemar.
The Lecht ski centre in Aberdeenshire closed due to drifting snow on Sunday night with the operators saying it will not resume for snow sports until Boxing Day, reports the S.D.E.
A yellow warning for ice has now been issued for large parts of northern Scotland from 9pm on Sunday, December 22 until 10am on Monday, December 23. The Met Office said showers will continue into the first part of Sunday night before dying out later.
As skies clear and winds ease, “temperatures will fall quickly, leading to some icy patches developing on untreated roads, footpaths and cycle paths”. The Met Office expects icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths while injuries from slips and falls in icy surfaces are expected.
Travel disruption is expected to continue into Monday after gusting winds of over 80mph through the weekend. On Sunday, the main east coast link to England, the A1, was blocked in both directions at Thistly Cross and the A720 Edinburgh ring road was blocked west bound by an accident at Lothianburn.
The A7 was shut north-bound at Mosspaul due to another accident and the Dornoch Bridge was closed to high-sided vehicles. Islanders saw their journeys cancelled on the ferries and planes with the majority of Cal Mac crossings on the west coast were called off for the second day in a row and a combination of weather and technical problems will curtail some sailings on Monday.
At Glasgow Airport on Sunday there were cancellations to Barra, Benbecula, Islay and Donegal with Loganair and the Aer Lingus 12.45 flight to Belfast was also called off. Network Rail announced a loss of power to the overhead lines at Paisley Gilmour Street yesterday, resulting in delays between Paisley and Glasgow Central.
Dundrennan in Kirkcudbrightshire was the windiest place in Scotland on Sunday with a recorded speed of 67mph. On Saturday, Kirkwall on Orkney was the windiest in the UK, at 82mph.
