Scotland star Scott McTominay has broken his own record whilst helping Napoli return to top spot in Serie A.

The midfielder, who joined international teammate Billy Gilmour in Naples over the summer, has become a firm favourite at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona – and has been putting a shift in for Antonio Conte’s side after being clocked running for 7.78 miles during a his side’s victory against Genoa.

The 58 times capped ace has been a huge success since his move to Italy at the end of the last transfer window from Manchester United for a fee reported to be around £25m. And he helped send Napoli back to the top of the league with a 2-1 win at Genoa. Serie A stats published a list of distances covered by the players in weekend games and McTominay was top of the table after running for 12.52 kilometres, which is 7.78 miles during the 90 minutes he spent on the park.

Last month, McTominay topped a list of total distance covered by all players in Serie A, and speaking about the distance he’s covering the 28-year-old said: “My role changes with every game – sometimes I am more forward and sometimes I have more of a protection role. It depends on the situations. “My objective is the same, however, to create chances to score for myself or for my teammates, to be effective and also protect the defence.”

McTominay has made 13 league starts for Napoli and scored three Serie A goals so far, and opened up on his decision to leave Manchester United last week. He told the BBC : “I saw the passionate fans, I saw the coach, I saw the players and I saw an opportunity. “I took it. I didn’t look back. It didn’t take me long to make the decision because I knew that was what I wanted and I’ll never have any regrets in my life. As soon as I put my mind to something I want to do it, that’s it. There’s no holding me back.”
