Sir Alex Ferguson has opened up about his life a year after the passing of his beloved wife, Lady Cathy Ferguson.

Lady Cathy, who was married to the former Manchester United and Aberdeen manager, died in October 2023 at their Cheshire residence. It was back in 1964 when a young Alex first met her while they both worked at a typewriter factory.

The pair went on to marry in 1966, with Sir Alex frequently attributing his triumphant career to his wife, describing her as a critical influence and steadfast support throughout his time in football.

Since retiring from management, Sir Alex has been actively involved with a charity that leverages music as a therapeutic tool for people struggling with dementia.

During his heartwarming feature on BBC Breakfast, he curated a touching playlist that charted the significant moments in his life, including a particular tune in homage to Cathy, reports the Mirror.

Nina prompted: “Let’s listen to this track though because I think this one that you said reminded you of Cathy.”

As ‘My Own True Love’ playeda melody from the classic film Gone with the WindSir Alex showed a profound emotional reaction.

Reflecting after the music, he shared fondly, “When I went to see Gone with the Wind I was only 21 or 22, we were courting at the time.”

During the poignant conversation, Nina inquired about Sir Alex Ferguson’s life after the many years spent with his wife Cathy: “How’s life now without Cathy now after all of those decades together? ” Sir Alex emotionally reflected, “Well 50 years is a long time. She was a great wife and a fantastic mother, great grandmother.”

Delving further into the influence Cathy had on Sir Alex’s life and career, Nina observed, “The person behind your success? ” and reminded him of his past sentiments: “I once read that she was the most important influence.”

To this, Alex warmly responded, “Oh yes, the leader of the band.”
