An impressive defensive effort enabled the Vipers to win their first ever state championship.

ARLINGTON, Texas — Vandegrift defeated Southlake Carroll 24-17 in the UIL 6A Division II State Championship game at AT&T Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Dragons, who were riding high off their 20-17 win over Longview in the State Semifinal game, couldn’t seem to match the effectiveness of the Vandegrift offense despite having similar stat lines at halftime.

Vandegrift, who entered the state championship allowing just 14.4 points per game, refused to let the Dragons do what they wanted offensively. A key goal-line stand with under three minutes to go in the game sealed the win for the Vipers.

For Southlake Carroll, their perfect season was squandered as the Dragons missed out on the chance to win their first state championship since 2011.
