A takeaway driver tragically died after his car was plunged into water when he reversed following a delivery. It is reported the man in his 40s died when his car ended up in a canal last night having just delivered food to a nearby mobile home close to the water.

According to the Irish Mirror, the man’s death occurred at the waterway in Co Kldare. The man, understood to be a father-of-one, delivered food to a nearby mobile home on the canal at Grangeclare West, Kilmeague at around 8pm.

As he began to leave the area the car is believed to have accidentally skidded down into the canal when he reversed. Emergency crews were able to pull haul the man out from the water – but he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

A post-mortem has still to be carried out.The scene remains sealed off for Forensic Collision Investigators and the Garda Water Unit, and access along the canal is currently restricted.

A Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí are appealing to witnesses to a fatal road traffic incident Grangeclare West, Kilmeague, Co. Kildare, yesterday evening, Sunday 22nd December 2024. The incident occurred at approximately 8pm when it is believed a car entered the Grand Canal at the above location.

“A man, aged in his 40s, was recovered from the water and treated by crew from the National Ambulance Service. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. The body of the man has been removed from the scene and a post mortem will take place.

“The scene is currently held for examination by Forensic Collision Investigators and the Garda Water Unit. Access along the canal at this location is currently restricted.

“Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward. Those with camera footage, including motorists with dash-cam, from the area at the time are asked to provide it to investigating Gardaí.
