WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – After a busy couple of weeks in Washington, next week looks to be quiet during the holidays.
Congress left D.C. after passing a continuing resolution to keep the federal government funded through mid-March. The 119th Congress will be seated on January 3, 2025; with a possible speaker battle brewing for Mike Johnson’s gavel. Johnson lost confidence with members after bungling the appropriations process the past few weeks. President-elect Donald Trump and tech mogul Elon Musk pressured Johnson to abandon a bi-partisan spending agreement in favor of one that notably increased the debt ceiling. This upset Democrats and fiscally conservative Republicans. After the Trump backed bill died on the House floor, Johnson was forced to cut a deal that didn’t include a change to the debt ceiling, which Trump specifically asked for.
President Joe Biden is planning to head to the U.S. Virgin Islands to celebrate the holidays. He has one more international trip to Italy on his calendar before his term ends.
The National Menorah will be lit on Christmas day because Hanukkah starts December 25.
In Washington, I’m Rhyan Henson.
