James Corden seemingly dropped a bombshell about the fate of Gavin and Stacey during his appearance on Tuesday’s BBC Breakfast.

In a segment with the cast, which had been pre-recorded for the BBC One programme, James, who not only plays Smithy but also co-created the beloved series with Ruth Jones, was asked about his feelings on shooting the final episode.

His reply was heartfelt: “On one level, it’s amazing and it’s so joyous. Every day has just been so great and then you’ve got this overwhelming feeling that hits you, well, hits me, every couple of hours where you start going: ‘Oh God, we’re not going to be doing this again!'”

Furthermore, he went on to make a cryptic comment with a short six-word statement: “It can’t carry on after this”, before teasingly adding: “We can’t see a way how it could, you’ll have to wait and see!”

During the discussion, James also divulged: “I can tell you it isn’t set at Christmas. So we felt we’ve done two Christmas Day specials… we’ve done a Christmas in Essex and a Christmas in Barry. The story is set after where the last one left off.”

He clarified continuity issues by stating: “In the timeline of history, it is set after that moment, there’s no time jumping, we’re not going back in time.”

As for the cast, they have all openly talked about the forthcoming Christmas special, hinted to serve as the grand finale to the series we’ve grown attached to, reports Wales Online.

Ruth Jones has given a tantalising hint about the upcoming final episode of Gavin and Stacey in an interview featured on Lorraine on December 20, just a handful of days before its broadcast on Christmas Day. She suggested that viewers will grasp the reason for it being the concluding episode once they see it, implying that significant events are set to unfold.

When probed with the question: “Is it the last one?” Ruth’s response was telling: “Well, yeah. It has to be. When you see it you’ll understand why.”

Gavin and Stacey first hit our screens on BBC Three back in 2007, delivering 20 episodes across three series. The finale sees the original cast reuniting, including fan favourites Uncle Bryn and Jason, promising to address some long-standing mysteries.
