(Gray News) – The Mega Millions jackpot has reached a whopping $1 billion ahead of the game’s Christmas Eve drawing.
“Can you imagine going to bed and then waking up on Dec. 25, checking your ticket and realizing you just won a $1 billion jackpot?” Joshua Johnston, the Mega Millions Consortium’s lead director, said in a statement.
The jackpot is the seventh to surpass the billion-dollar marker, according to a news release from Mega Millions. If won, it will also be the largest jackpot won in the month of December.
Mega Millions said the jackpot has been growing since a $810 million jackpot was won on Sept. 10. Mega Millions said excitement over a “big holiday jackpot” caused the latest boost.
Tuesday’s drawing will take place at 11 p.m. Eastern Time. Tickets are sold for $2 in 45 states, Washington D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
