BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – Over the course of 93 years the Bluefield Union Mission has been providing for the community of Bluefield and the surrounding area every single day.
The director of the mission tells us he is proud of the community, because without their support it wouldn’t be possible.
“We’ve been blessed. This community is the most generous community there is, they just give of themselves,” said Craig Hammond.
Beginning before Christmas Eve the mission prepared Christmas take home meal bags to help those unable to cook for any reason.
Hammond tells us they gave out more than 300 meal bags on Christmas Eve and right after prep work began for Christmas Day. A group of around 20 volunteers banded together sorting toys, preparing food, organizing clothes, blankets and more.
“People just feel compelled because they’re so blessed. You just can’t contain it. You have to share it. And this is all about sharing the joy that they have with others,” said Hammond.
This Christmas tradition for the mission runs because of volunteers and it’s also a tradition everyone looks forward to.
“It’s a great time for the volunteers to come together. They give up their holiday to come and share their blessings with others. And every year we look forward to this,” said Hammond.
Hammond says the Bluefield Union Mission is always open and always in need of donations and volunteers. If you’re interested, Hammond says they can always plug you in somewhere.
