Gavin and Stacey star Robert Wilfort, who plays Jason West in the BBC comedy, has admitted fans will never find out what happened on the fishing trip with Uncle Bryn (Rob Brydon).

Since the series began, the famous fishing trip has been referenced many times, yet neither Jason nor Bryn has revealed what happened between them.

The only other person who knows what went down in Dave Coaches (Steffan Rhodri).

Robert and his co-stars spoke in a Q&A ahead of the series finale, and during the chat, the actor confessed he doesn’t even know what happened on the fishing trip – and it will stay that way.

Robert said: “I’d like to say now and forever, the joke has always been that you don’t find out what happens on the fishing trip.

“I’m sorry, but that has always been a joke, and it always will be because it’s funny. It’s funnier that way and I was so pleased that we didn’t reveal it because we never know what it is like everyone else.”

The actor went on to describe filming the series finale as a “complete joy”.

James Corden, who plays Smithy, and Ruth Jones, who plays Nessa, also revealed that the finale could have had a completely different ending than the one viewers saw.

As the festive instalment came to an end, Nessa and Smithy finally got their happy ending as they tied the knot in front of their loved ones.

However, Ruth went on to detail how Smithy’s proposal to Nessa was meant to be in an airport, but due to several complications, they were unable to.

She recalled: “Originally, that scene was meant to be set in an airport, and unfortunately, we couldn’t get permission to film because it had to be in Cardiff Airport, and we couldn’t get permission to film there.

“So initially, we thought, ‘Oh no, this is awful; what are we going to do? because it’s going to be a big farewell, a big reunion scene at the airport. Where can we do it?’ And then, we came up with this alternative.”

James added that one of their co-stars, who works behind the scenes, came up with the idea of having the proposal at the dock.

Gavin & Stacey is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
