TULSA, Okla. (KOKI) – When a pair of hip hop artists got married, they decided to do it their way by rapping their wedding vows. Video of the moment quickly went viral but not in a good way.
Weeks before hip hop artists Aaron and Mariah Sawyer said “I do” in their front yard in September, they decided to rap their wedding vows. It would be a surprise for their 100 guests.
“That’s how we met was through hip hop and rap, so it was perfect,” Mariah Sawyer said.
After their paper vows, the bride and groom broke tradition with a beat and went from love to lyrics.
Shortly after the wedding, the couple posted video of their vows online. It went viral, with over 10 million people watching it on TikTok and Instagram. Most of the comments were hateful, but the Sawyers didn’t let that impact their honeymoon stage. Instead, they say it brought them closer together.
“It’s a testament to how solid our love and relationship is because a lot of people can put a lot of stress on the relationship, getting a bunch of negative comments,” Aaron Sawyer said.
Despite the hate, the couple kept it real, continuing to follow their dreams.
“Even though people were hating on our wedding vows, we were still living out our dreams as hip hop artists at that same moment, so it was kind of fueling that fire, that passion, that drive to keep being our authentic selves,” Mariah Sawyer said.
Aaron Sawyer says this is not the first time either of them have received hate as musicians, and overall, the couple are grateful to those who have watched their vows.
“It’s just really allowing people to recognize us as artists in the hip hop scene, so it’s been really impactful,” Mariah Sawyer said.
The newlyweds say they plan to track and release their wedding vows song.
