Shock jock and former Premier League football Jason Cundy claimed Celtic and Rangers would make as big an impact in England’s top flight as BARNSLEY.
The loudmouth Londoner has a history for sticking the boot into Scottish football and took yet another savage swipe at the standard north of the border and Glasgow’s Big Two.
It has been a debate for years how well the Old Firm would do in the Premier League and Cundy – who played for Chelsea and Tottenham during his career – claimed they would be in the bottom half and likened the duo to Barnsley, currently nine in England’s League One.
It came during a discussion for talkSPORT radio’s Christmas Dinner special with ex-Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor and former Scotland international Alan Brazil.
Brazil is Celtic-daft and show host and Glaswegian Shebahn Aherne who kicked off the debate by asking: “What about Celtic and Rangers join the Premier League in 2025?”
But Brazil said: “It’s not going to happen. It’s turkeys voting for Christmas. If you are the chairman of a Premier League club in England, would you allow Celtic and Rangers to come in?”
Cundy then said: “It’s like putting Barnsley in there!”
Agbonlahor said: “That’s harsh Cundy. Celtic would do well in the Premier League,” but Cundy argued: “No they wouldn’t. Liverpool have won one Premier League in the last 30 years. One. What makes you think Celtic would do anything?”
Brazil said: “I’m not saying winning it but are you telling me we couldn’t give Wolves or Ipswich a game? You’re forgetting how much money you get in the EPL compared to the SPFL. It’s peanuts.”
Agbonlahor : “Are you saying Celtic would get less points than Derby?” Cundy: “I think Celtic would be bottom half at very best. Even if they stay there 15 years. Leeds got relegated.”
Brazil : “Celtic beat Leeds home and away in 1970. Rangers beat Leeds (1992).”
Agbonlahor : “I think teams would struggle with the atmosphere at Celtic Park. I’ve been lucky enough to go a game there. I think Chelsea would struggle there.”
Cundy: “No they wouldn’t.”
Aherne : “Would it not be excellent – Celtic against Chelsea on a Saturday afternoon?”
Cundy : “It’s fine but they’d just roll them over. Villa go up there. Three points. Chelsea go up there. Three points. Arsenal go up there. Three points.”
Aherne: “That’s lazy!”
