MasterChef judge John Torode’s partner Lisa Faulkner has opened up about her New Year’s Eve nerves, and why she has so much anxiety around this time of year.
She confessed the traditional pressure to “have a good time” on the night doesn’t appeal to her according to reports in the Mirror, preferring quieter activities to bring in the New Year like “cooking or going for a walk”.
She detailed when speaking to Bella Magazine, “It’s one of my worst nights of the year. I don’t like the feeling of the end of something. There is always so much pressure to have a good time, and I don’t want to stay out late. I used to love that, but that’s not me anymore. I’d rather celebrate by cooking and going for a walk on New Year’s Day.”
The actress also disclosed her aspirations for 2025 and her trusted remedy for hangovers. Regarding resolutions, she stated: “I always say I’m going to worry less. Whether I’ll actually do that, I don’t know, but I will try!”
As for curing a bad head after festivities and a few too many tipples, she recommends: “Coca-Cola, a banana, and a packet of Quavers. I very rarely get hungover any more; I can’t drink like I used to, John [Torode] would say, ‘Hair of the dog’.”
Lisa is not alone in her thoughts about the stresses of New Year’s Eve and the dreaded hangover, with various reports and specialists noting evolving trends in how people mark the occassion.
E1 club’s Operations Director Jack Henry said that a new trend is on the rise, with party-goers opting to ring in the new year on January 1st rather than the traditional New Year’s Eve celebrations. Henry pinpointed several reasons for this switch: “I think there are many reasons why.”

He shared, “There’s less pressure for sure, less risk of having a ruined night out no one wants to spend the countdown in the queue and there’s a more relaxed atmosphere on New Year’s Day.”
When it comes to keeping the dreaded hangover at bay, Dr Neena Chandrasekaran provided the Daily Express with some expert advice on pre-emptive measures. “If you are going for a night out on the town and you are going to drink alcohol, eating cheese before drinking alcohol can decrease your risk of having a hangover,” she stated.
Dr Chandrasekaran detailed further: “Cheese has a lot of protein, fat and complex carbs that can coat the stomach, which decreases the absorption of alcohol. Cheese can help the body metabolise alcohol better and prevent liver damage.”
She added the benefits of cheese don’t stop there: “Cheese also replenishes nutrients because it is full of B vitamin and calcium these specific nutrients are depleted from the body when drinking alcohol.
“Calcium, which can be depleted through alcohol specifically helps to improve nerve and muscle function, and B vitamins are needed for energy and metabolism.”
