CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (WDBJ) – For countless families around our hometowns, the holidays are all about spending a day or two setting up decorations for the holiday season.

For others, it’s all about the competition.

The Harrell family has been going all out on Christmas decorations for the past three years. They said it’s no easy task, taking nearly three weekends and becoming quite an investment.

But the family of four is fueled by some friendly competition and bringing holiday cheer not just for their family, but the whole community.

A favorite Christmas tradition is driving through neighborhoods and finding the house with the prettiest lights. It’s what the Harrell family aims to make their Christiansburg home during the holidays.

“Our inspiration to start decorating is mainly just to spread holiday cheer, mainly for the kids and people driving by at night,” said Brack, the Dad of the family and connoisseur of all decorations. “I’ve always had an affinity towards the multicolor lights. My mom was big on decorating, but it was very colonial style.”

“We changed that up!” chimed Laken, the mother of the family.

From holiday characters to household favorites, the Harrells have everything in their yard to celebrate the holiday season.

“We tried to just make it as fun as possible. We don’t really have a set theme, if we see something online that we think is nice . . . we’ll figure out how how it’s done,” said Brack.

The Harrells love having a bit of fun, but a competitive spirit also runs in the family.

“Our competition is very close with several people, ‘cause we have a lot of people that like to decorate, but some that don’t. And many of them this year [went] all out this year for us, so it’s really fun,” said Aubie, Brack and Laken’s oldest daughter.

The Harrall family has won Christiansburg’s Christmas House Decorating contest for the past two years and they appreciate seeing the hard work pay off.

“It feels good. It’s nice to see appreciation for what we’re trying to do, and it’s also nice to know that at least the majority of people thought that our house brought the most Christmas cheer to the area,” said Brack.

For the majority of people, Christmas decorating shopping has come to an end. But the Harrell family is already preparing for next year and they’re looking forward to some friendly competition and spending another season spreading Christmas cheer.
