AUSTIN, Texas — Help could be on the way for Hays CISD teachers and staff who are struggling with housing costs, as the district is reportedly considering a partnership that would specifically create affordable homes for its workers.
The homes would be built by developer Upward Communities, which would cover all construction costs. The consideration is notable, as the area is currently dealing with a backlog on affordable housing waitlists.
Each of the units would consist of four bedrooms and two bathrooms, and rent would be priced no higher than $2,000 per month. Unlike typical affordable housing projects, Hays CISD would donate each of the homes to district employees.
Anyone with a district paycheck would be eligible for a unit, ranging from teachers to support staff.
The Hays CISD school board is expected to vote on the proposal sometime in early 2025.
