DRIFTWOOD, Texas — A mother and her young child were killed in a fire on Christmas Eve in Hays County, according to the Hays County Fire Marshall’s Office.

North Hays Fire units responded around 8:40 a.m. Dec. 24 to 700 S. Creekwood Dr. in Driftwood, after receiving a call about a barn or shed on fire.

Once on scene, responders found two victims just before 9 a.m. in an apartment in a horse barn: a 29-year-old woman and a child between 1-3 years old. Their exact identities have not been shared with the public.

According to the Fire Marshall’s Office, initial calls were not very descriptive, “which delayed response time.”

Officials said the fire was put out by 10 a.m., and it’s uncertain whether there were working smoke detectors inside the unit when the incident occurred.

The cause of the fire is still unknown as the investigation continues.

This story will be updated when officials share more information.
