A passenger who fell from a Norwegian cruise ship remains missing despite extensive search efforts. The individual is believed to have gone overboard yesterday afternoon while the vessel was en route from Jamaica to the Bahamas, reports the Mirror.
Reportedly travelling with family as part of a larger group, the 51-year-old man’s relatives are receiving support from the cruise line’s teams. The voyage, which began in Port Canaveral, Florida, last Saturday has since been rerouted to Nassau in the wake of the incident.
Norwegian Cruise Line was approached for a statement by The Mirror. In response to MailOnline, a spokesperson for the cruise company said: “The authorities were immediately notified, and a search and rescue operation under the guidance and oversight of the Bahamas Rescue Coordination Center went underway.”
Despite exhaustive search measures, authorities have now apparently abandoned their rescue attempts. According to Cruise Hive, a publication specializing in cruise news, the search for the man has ceased.
The news source indicated that rescue operations had limited daylight hours on Thursday, complicating search efforts as night approached. Despite the incident, the ship has been given the all-clear to proceed with its journey.
The Norwegian Epic is presently on a week-long Caribbean cruise.
